Wisdom tooth removal is a fairly common procedure, and a dental discount plan can help make it more affordable. Employers are looking to pare back benefits, and dental insurance is often one of the first to go, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. If you need these teeth extracted, you may want to ensure that you don’t end up with an unnecessary financial burden. Wisdom molars, also known as third molars, usually start emerging during a person’s adolescence but may be as late as the person’s 20s. Located at the very back of the mouth, often they never even surface, because they become impacted against adjacent teeth. These can actually become painful in some cases. Why Extract?In addition to a visual examination, a dentist may also use an X-ray or some other form of technology to assess the situation underneath the gum line. This will help determine if and how the wisdom molars need to be extracted. A discount plan may be available to reduce the cost of the exam. Dentists recommend extracting them by age 18 if they look like they could be problematic. Patients over the age of 35 have a greater risk of complications from the procedure, because the teeth fuse to the bone as people age. An extraction may be necessary if it looks like the wisdom teeth might interrupt normal sinus functionality or cause the other teeth to shift. Third molars that never grow up out of the gums can be painful as well.
