Emergency Dental Care Step by Step

Published Dec 23 2009

There are many ways to create your own emergency dental situation. Some are more common than others. In some situations a seemingly harmless food item could become your mouth’s worst enemy. If you have bitten into one of your mother’s “new recipes” and found the toothpick a little bit too late, you know that you do not have to get into a fight to enter into a dental emergency.

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, the steps to remedy your situation are simple. If you are in a major emergency, your first step should be to call the hospital. However, you may find that if you really need emergency dentistry the hospital will not have the expertise to take care of you, or they may say your particular case is not severe enough for them to help you!

When you turn to a dentist for help, your dental emergency may create a financial problem. You think you need insurance, but if dental insurance is not provided through your work, how will you pay for your dental bill?

If you don’t have time for waiting period limitations, pre-existing conditions clauses, or annual maximums, then insurance for your emergency dentistry will not be an option. You may consider simply using a credit card and paying the dentist the price they asked. However, most people just do not have three thousand dollars to spend, even with a credit card. (Besides the resulting interest would cause the original price you paid to double, and that is just ridiculous!) Perhaps you resolve to just wait it out. Maybe you think the pain will go away, or that your dental emergency will just fix itself. You could just wait until the hurt tooth falls out, or try to save money to have the tooth extracted.

You do have a third option that may be a great help to you as you face emergency dental needs. Dental discount plans reduce the price of what you pay for dental work and are typically available immediately. There are many dental plans available at a much lower price than regular insurance. These plans often have no waiting periods, no annual maximums, and no deductibles.

Remember that dental plans usually have a network set up with dentists that you must go to in order to receive the discounts. This means that if you have a favorite dentist, you may have to choose between having that person work on your teeth for a higher price, or having a new dentist work on your teeth for a whole lot less. Still, if you are in an emergency dental situation, you need to be treated as quickly as possible!

After you have enrolled in your discount dental plan, call a dentist in the network and set up an appointment so you can be treated as soon as possible. A large dental corporation such as Aspen Dental would be a great place to try to avoid any extra fees for an emergency appointment. With just a quick investigation online, you can get emergency dental care without going bankrupt or losing your teeth in the process!
