Home Dental Remedies for a Toothache

Published Nov 25 2009

When a tooth is hurting, it really affects the whole person. A "toothache" generally refers to any pain which is in the mouth or tooth area. Usually it originates from the tooth itself, but the pain can also come from the gums or jaw as well.

The best remedy for a toothache is actually a dentist. A general dentist will typically begin by taking a set of x-rays and performing an oral evaluation. As soon as the evaluation is finished, a dentist can tell exactly what the problem is and what needs to be done in order to fix the toothache. A dentist is trained to take care of the problem and get teeth back to normal.

However, many people prefer not to go to the dentist and have sought out herbal home remedies to sooth a toothache. The information listed here has not been tested, but many people swear by the home remedies offered.

The first home remedy thought to cure a toothache is garlic. Chewing garlic may be a way to sooth tooth pain and to even help prevent toothaches in the future. In order to try this remedy simply take a clove of garlic, peel off the skin, and chew the clove using the problem tooth. Garlic may have some medicinal qualities which help alleviate pain. Even if it does not cure the problem, it may help with the pain.

Another home remedy for a toothache is consuming raw onions. The bacteria in onions has been shown to eliminate many germs in the mouth and can effectively help protect the teeth from future decay. In order for this to be most effective, the onion does not actually have to be consumed (swallowed), but there should be a concentrated effort to thoroughly chew the onion using the entire mouth. The more you chew the onion, the more effect it will have upon your teeth. If there is one problem tooth which needs to be addressed, a small piece of onion can be placed against that problem area to help fight the germs which are causing the toothache.

Many people also claim that limes are a good way to keep teeth healthy and prevent a toothache. Limes are high in vitamin C, which is good for strengthening teeth. The limes themselves really are not going to be any different than eating an orange or drinking orange juice. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that lime and lemon juice is very acidic; so if you want to use limes or lemons to help strengthen your teeth, wash down the lime juice with a bit of water to wash the access acid away from your teeth. Over time, excessive amounts of acid can be harmful to teeth.

A final home remedy for a toothache is clove. Natural clove does have certain antiseptic properties which can help with infections. The clove also has some numbing properties which will help with the actual pain involved with a toothache. Chewing clove can help with a toothache, although clove oil is actually much more concentrated and does not require chewing on an already compromised tooth.

In all, there are some home remedies which can be used to help with the pain of a toothache, as well as helping with the actual causes of a toothache. No treatment can replace a trip to the dentist to get checked out, but there are possibilities out there which can make the wait more bearable.
