Good Morning America Contributor Endorses Discount Clubs

The idea of a discount club where you can save a substantial amount of money on health care is not a new one, but many people have never even heard of it.

Good Morning America featured the concept on Wednesday. The show’s personal finance contributor Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments, heavily endorsed discount clubs. Good Morning America listed some numbers from the National Coalition of Health Care saying that American families spent approximately $6,000 on health insurance and other medical costs last year, and by 2012 that number may rise to $9,000.

A discount plan could help reduce that burden by lowering the price on health care, often regardless of pre-existing conditions. The patient pays the health care provider directly rather than juggling claims and deductibles.

She recommended the discount system for everyone but said it could especially benefit people in these situations:

• They currently have no form of insurance
• They have used up the yearly maximum with their insurance and would have to pay out of pocket for any additional work
• They have a large deductible with their insurance plan

Hobson emphasized that discount plans are not insurance. You can’t be denied, and there is no deductible.
