Discount Dental Care Could Start with Healthy Gums

According to this article at Perio.org, a recent study by the American Psychological Association shows that over 80% of Americans rank money and the rough economy as factors that cause them significant stress. Stress can lead to many health problems, including gum disease, also known as periodontitis. But don’t worry! A dental savings plan can give you healthy gums and save you money!

Causes of Periodontitis

In February 2009, a study in the Journal of Periodontology confirmed that stress can interfere with oral hygiene. In this study, 56% of participants reported that they neglected their regular brushing and flossing because of stress and noted the association of stress with the hormone cortisol. David Cochran, DDS, PhD, president of the American Academy of Periodontology and chair of the Department of Periodontics at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, states that stress can cause an individual to be more vulnerable to dangerous habits that affect oral health. Stress could cause an individual to abuse tobacco or alcohol, or even neglect his or her oral hygiene. "These lifestyle choices are known risk factors for the development of periodontal disease, which has been connected to several other chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes," said Cochran.

Preventing Periodontitis

Reducing stress in order to avoid gum disease may not only help improve your general health and well-being, but it could also help you save money as well! A study in the November 2007 Journal of Periodontology found that preventing gum disease is one way to help discount your health care expenses. This study showed that patients with severe gum disease had 21% higher health care costs compared to those whose gums were healthy. "In these stressful times I encourage my patients to pay even more attention to their teeth and gums," says Dr. Cochran. "And in turn, since preventing gum disease may help reduce overall health care expenses, maintaining a healthy mouth may actually be a stress reliever in itself." In addition, a discount dental plan could help you save even more money, which is important in today’s economy, and not to mention a stress reliever.
