Do you provide your employees with dental insurance? If so, you may be helping improve their overall health, according to a recent survey by Delta Dental. Dental health is important to improve a person’s overall well-being, and those who receive dental insurance from their employer are more likely to have good dental health. Results of the Survey
Delta Dental surveyed 1,003 American adults (ages 18 and up) about the status of their oral health and overall well-being. The results of the survey are as follows:
- Those who went to the dentist at least once per year were 22% more likely to describe their overall well-being (physical and emotional) as good
- Those who went to the dentist at least once per year were 37% more likely to report good oral health
- 83% of those who were college educated visited the dentist regularly as opposed to 59% who did not have a college degree
- 75% of those who live in the northeastern part of the U.S. reported going to the dentist regularly as opposed to 60% of southerners; however, this was not found to have a significant effect on the state of oral health
- 27% said they have oral health issues they want to resolve
Offering Dental Insurance to Employees
So what do these results have to do with employers offering dental insurance to their employees? The survey further concluded the following:
- 78% of those who had dental coverage visited the dentist regularly, as opposed to only 52% of those without dental coverage
- Of those who made under $25,000 per year, only 46% go to the dentist regularly as opposed to 86% who make $100,000 per year or more
- Of those with dental issues they wish to have fixed, 62% say they haven’t yet gotten treatment because they can’t afford it
- Those with coverage are 14% more likely to report better well-being than those without
As you can see, money is a huge factor in how often people see the dentist, and those without coverage are less likely to get the treatment they need. This affects employers because 1 in 6 Americans report having missed work due to dental issues. Therefore, employers that offer dental benefits are not only improving the well-being of their employees, but they may also be increasing productivity in the workplace.
According to Darci Shaw, associate director of marketing communications at Delta Dental Plans Association, people are less likely to pick up a voluntary benefit such as dental insurance. Because of this, it is important for employers to provide materials to educate their employees on the importance of picking up the benefit. Doing this can help reassure those who may be hesitant about picking up the dental insurance, especially if employers target those who have not been to the dentist in a while.
If you don’t currently offer dental insurance to your employees, you may want to seriously consider doing so. If you do, make sure that you provide enough information about the plan you use and the importance of receiving dental care. Providing access to dental care will ultimately not only benefit your employees, but your company as well.
