Loving Your Teeth for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a day of excitement, giddiness, hopefulness, dreaminess and…. Well, maybe I’m getting carried away. While the day itself might not be a scene from a Nicholas Sparks novel, you never know what fun things could happen. So naturally, you want to look your best. Here are some ways you can improve your smile and love your teeth on Valentine’s Day:

1. Secret Snacks

You may be surprised to learn that certain foods have hidden benefits that can boost your teeth’s health and brightness. For instance, crunchy foods, such as apples, celery or carrots stimulate saliva, which helps cleanse your mouth naturally. Certain fruits like strawberries have special enzymes in them that act as a bleach on your teeth. Broccoli leaves a film on your teeth, preventing staining from other foods or drinks.

2. Things to Avoid

Drinks like coffee, tea, cola or red wine all have the tendency to stain your teeth.  Watch how much you drink of each, and be sure to brush your teeth relatively soon after you do. Snacks or drinks in high-sugar quantity can be just as harmful for your teeth. Instead of food or drink that might damage your smile, go for things that might improve it, such as: water, citrus fruits, cheese/milk, fish and cocoa.

3. Other Methods

Certain lipstick shades can enhance the whiteness of your teeth. Using a cherry red, soft pink or dark berry shade – colors that have a blue-base or pink-base undertones – can reduce the yellow tones your teeth may have.

You can also use items commonly found in the home to make your own whitening paste. An at-home recipe for whiter teeth:

  • 1 t. of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 t. of baking soda
  • A little water

Brushing with this paste for a couple of minutes regularly can gradually improve the brightness of your teeth.

4. Dental Care/Dentist Check-ups

You can always go to the dentist for a last-minute cleaning (Don’t have a dental plan? Check out our discount dental plan, which you’ll be able to use immediately) or see about getting whitening professionally done. Some dentists use the whitening method of peroxide gel paired with a fluorescent light or laser. And don’t forget to simply brush, floss and rinse with mouthwash on a daily basis – probably the easiest and most simple path to pearly whites.

This Valentine’s Day, try one of our methods above to improve your smile. Not only will your teeth look great, but they will feel great, too!
