The mouth is a dangerous place. And not for food or anything like that – it’s a dangerous place for YOU. Why? Because the lack of oral care and good dental hygiene can cause serious problems to your overall health, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney cancer, diabetes and even premature death.

So, what causes gum disease? Essentially, one thing:
-
- Plaque on your teeth. It starts in the areas you aren’t brushing. Bacteria builds up on your teeth and gums, which leads to inflammation – and this is just the beginning. This is why it’s important to keep up a habit of cleaning your teeth daily, and also going to the dentist routinely.
How do I know if I have gum disease? Here are some symptoms:
-
- Bad breath (that won’t go away)
- Red and swollen gums
- Tender and bleeding gums
- Painful chewing
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive teeth
If you have any of these, it would be best to go to your dentist and have them do a professional diagnosis. They will also be able to provide any treatment that is needed.
How do I stop gum disease from happening?
-
- Brush with fluoride toothpaste (for best results, do this at least twice a day).
- Floss. It’s a hard habit to keep up, but trust me, it helps.
- Use mouth wash.
- Routinely visit your dentist. Going to an expert will help you not only feel better, but it might also save you from some future pain. Dentists can recognize symptoms before anything bad happens.
The moral of the story is this: take care of your teeth and follow your dentist’s advice. This might save you from a lot of pain in the future!
